Gutierrez wants F1 future sorted within two weeks

Gutierrez's current team Haas, which the Mexican had signed for at the end of 2015 after a year as Ferrari's reserve driver, is yet to announce its line-up for next year.

It is understood that Romain Grosjean will remain part of the American team for its second season in F1, but the fate of Gutierrez's seat remains uncertain, with both Gene Haas and team boss Gunther Steiner insisting the American outfit is yet to make a decision.

In the press conference ahead of his home grand prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Gutierrez said he cannot afford to wait much longer for Haas to decide whether it will retain him or not.

"I think Haas have been very clear in the media – they want to wait a few more races," Gutierrez said.

"We are now considering something and it will be important to close something soon as we cannot afford to wait to a few more races."

Queried on the deadline for the decision on his future, Gutierrez said: "The deadline should be in the next two weeks."

Gutierrez also said he didn't understand why it was taking Haas this long to decide.

"It's a question I often ask myself. My performance has been demonstrated in a very clear way within the team.

"I know very well that there have been many external factors that haven't allowed me to have the same opportunities as Romain. I don't see a reason why they need to wait. Maybe there's an external factor that is influencing this."

Gutierrez has recently been reported as an outside contender for a seat at Renault alongside Nico Hulkenberg.

Talking about the French marque's works effort, he said: "It's a very interesting project. I think it has a bright future. I think think there's no comparison between working for a manufacturer and for any other team."
