Hamilton tops day two at Jerez

Testing at Jerez continued on July 25th and eight drivers were on duty at the Spanish track, again in hot and sunny conditions. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was the quickest man of the day with a best time of 1:19.670 while preparing for the Hungarian Grand Prix. His programme was based on set up and aerodynamics and he completed 90 laps.

Toyota's Ralf Schumacher was second quickest, just under nine tenths off Hamilton's pace. The German practiced starts as well as set up, suspension and aero work. "Today went quite well, we went through all the items we had planned, including plenty of set-up work," Schumacher commented.
"We also did lots of practice starts because that is the area that we most need to improve. That went well and I'm quite happy with our progress. In the afternoon I did some long runs for further set-up comparisons and we completed our programme without problems."
Williams test driver Kazuki Nakajima was third on the time sheet. "We carried on with our general set-up and tyre work preparations ready for Hungary today," said test team manager Dickie Stanford. "We lost about two hours due to a scheduled engine change, but still managed to complete a considerable number of laps."
BMW Sauber joined the other teams and Robet Kubica set the fourth best time. Like many, he worked on set up, suspension and aerodynamics over 103 laps and the Swiss-German squad described it at a very successful day. Kubica is scheduled to continue on Thursday for second and last day of the team's test.
Renault's Heikki Kovalainen was fifth and racked up the most laps of the day, 104. "We had a good day of work today, testing the latest aerodynamic developments for the car," he said. "We did a lot of laps, completed a lot of tests and got a lot of data. The job now is to work through that and analyse it, in order to continue making progress ahead of the race in Hungary."
Mark Webber was behind the wheel for Red Bull and posted the sixth fastest time. He got through the planned programme of aerodynamics and set up, as well as some work in regard to the 2008 regulations. Red Bull Junior Sebastien Buemi, who was at work yesterday, will complete the test on Thursday.
Super Aguri test driver James Rossiter was seventh overall; he worked on tyres and set up in the morning then moved on to the evaluation of 2008 control systems in the afternoon. Rubens Barrichello rounded off the times for Honda in eighth, focusing on aero and mechanical tests.
Meanwhile, at Mugello Ferrari and Toro Rosso continued their work for the week. Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer was the quicker of the two drivers present with a best time of 1:21.847. His programme for the day was development of mechanical and aerodynamic components for the next few races.
Despite the alleged post-Nurburgring contretemps between Toro Rosso's Scott Speed and team boss Franz Tost, Speed was back in the cockpit today. He worked on brakes, aero and set up but was delayed by an electrical problem in the morning and a coolant leak in the afternoon.
In the UK, Spyker took to the Silverstone circuit for the first test of the new rear end and gearbox of the B spec car that is scheduled to make its debut in Turkey. Giedo van de Garde completed 151 laps of the short Stowe configuration and the team reported no problems.
"Today's test saw the introduction of a new rear end package as part of the team's development programme for this year's car," said chief race and test engineer Dominic Harlow. "The new systems ran faultlessly through the day and a good deal of information was collected to allow us to move on to the next stage of our plan for improving the performance of the F8-VII."
