Haryanto spins no surprise, says Manor

The Indonesian faced a tough baptism in his new Manor car last week as he completed his first laps since being confirmed as a 2016 F1 driver.

But despite a spin on each day, the second one of which cut short Haryanto's running after he damaged his rear wing, Ryan says that such incidents are nothing out of the ordinary for a rookie.

When asked if Haryanto had just been trying to find the limit, Ryan said: “Yes, I think so. To be honest, I would be surprised if they haven’t had a couple of incidents.

“But as long as he learns from it, that’s fine, and it doesn’t cost us, let’s get on with it.”

Ryan believes that although Haryanto and team-mate Pascal Wehrlein are both rookies, they are coming into the year with very different levels of preparation.

“Obviously, Pascal has come in from winning a championship, he has done a lot of mileage in an F1 car, in the class F1 car on the grid, and so he’s got a lot of experience and he knows what to expect.

“So for him, it was probably the transition into Manor which was a big issue.

“For Rio, it is just the opposite. He’s making a move up. So, pretty different approaches, but both are great kids, just having fun, and enjoying it.”

"Not here to make up numbers"

Ryan says that Manor is doing all it can to make the step into the midfield that has eluded it for quite some time.

“Certainly, we are not here just to turn up and make the numbers,” he said. “We want to put in a respectable performance.

“Everybody out there, every team out there, is doing the best they can. So, it’s not going to be easy.

"All we’ve got to do is the best we can and see how we get on. And we are confident we can do a lot better than we’ve done in the past.”
