Vettel – who was a four-time world champion with Red Bull – stomped across to Horner on the pitwall during the race to vent his fury about what happened.
After the race, Horner said all he could do was apologise for his driver’s actions.
“Unfortunately our race was totally screwed at the first corner,” said Horner. “I think Dani just misjudged his braking point, obviously he hit Seb, who then in turn hit the other Daniel.
“At that point both the front wings are gone, cars badly damaged, and the outcome was no points for either of our cars and obviously screwed Sebastian’s race as well."
When asked what Vettel had said to him, Horner replied: “Obviously he was slightly frustrated, all I could do was apologise, because this week it was unfortunately a mistake by Daniil Kvyat.
“The emotions run high with all these guys. At his home race, I think he’s just gone for too much too soon, we’ve seen so many incidents down there before. He’s just misjudged it.
“I think he knows what happened. All the drivers look at the replays. He’s misjudged that first corner, and then hit Sebastian.
“From a team point of view, it screwed our race completely, we could have scored sensible points today. We’ve given away a lot of points.”
