Allan McNish is to test for Penske Racing in the IRL series on Monday at the Fontana speedway in California. McNish finished his F1 season with Toyota by way of a huge crash in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix, which he escaped from thankfully intact. Toyota will supply Penske with engines next year and the two have given McNish the chance to test.

"I'm looking forward to trying out the Toyota IRL car with Penske Racing," said McNish. "I drove a CART car on a road course a few years back, but I've never had the chance to experience driving on an oval. This weekend I get to have a go and it's not only an oval, it's probably the fastest race track in the world. I'm very grateful to Toyota and Penske Racing for giving me this chance."
McNish wanted to try out an oval track and said racing at Indianapolis earlier this year had encouraged his interest: "As a professional racing driver, it's great to have new opportunities that present different challenges. Racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier this year in the USGP was one of the highs of the year for me, as the place is steeped in tradition and motor racing history. It also heightened my desire to experience an oval, as the F1 course only uses one of the turns. However, I do have respect for the concrete walls and will be aiming to keep my distance from these!"
Both McNish and team mate Mika Salo were dropped by Toyota after its debut season in F1, a move that surprised many. Salo initially said he was going to quit the sport, although that may change, while McNish is still hoping to be behind the wheel of a race car next year. What kind of race car is yet to be seen.
