STEWART-FORD NOTES AND QUOTES 1998 Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka Friday 30th October: FREE PRACTICE
Paul Stewart, Managing Director:
'A bit of a mixed Friday for the team. We didn't get as much running done as we would have liked owing to problems in setting up the car. We made a big alteration to set-up in the break between sessions including ratio changes which we believe has put us on the right track for the rest of the weekend. Rubens had a few minor glitches towards the end and came across traffic when on a quick lap as the session closed. Jos did a good job to finish 9th after early frustrations. We are confident that the work we got through today will put us in good shape for qualifying tomorrow.'
Martin Whitaker, Ford European Director of Motorsport:
'From an engine point of view we had a trouble free start to the Japanese Grand Prix. Both cars were using Series 5 engines today but will be fitted with Series 6 engines both Saturday and Sunday. Since the Luxembourg Grand Prix we have done a lot of testing with the Series 6 engines to distances in excess of 300km and we are now looking forward to this latest specification of engine making its racing debut on Sunday.'
Rubens Barrichello: Car no.18: SF-2/05 Laps: 20 Time:1:43.854 Position:17th
'I simply lost too much time getting the set-up right this morning. We made a change between sessions which helped the balance of the car. Unfortunately there were yellow flags everywhere at the end so my quick run was wasted. The car feels better than it has done for the last few races so I'm sure we can beat our average in qualifying.'
Jos Verstappen: Car no.19: SF-2/02 Laps:23 Time:1:42.191 Position:9th
'I'm very pleased with the progress we've made today. Initially we were struggling with oversteer and went through quite a few set-up changes. Fortunately it just all came together in the end when we put on the new tyres. The set-up of the car is still not perfect but we know what to do to improve it.'
T-car: SF-2/03
