JEREZ TESTING - 22, 23 and 24 April

Bridgestone Motorsport was present during all three days of the Jerez test, attending the ten F1 teams currently competing in the 1999 FIA world championships which decided to attend. The only absentee from the test was Arrows Grand Prix.

Included in the total of 1600 tyres brought from Bridgestone Motorsport were three different specifications of dry-weather compound: Hard, Medium and Soft. The 500 wet-weather tyres were available in two different compounds.

Due to the abrasive characteristics of the Spanish circuit, the compound most in demand throughout the three days was the Medium. The high wear rate at Jerez raises the risk of rapid tyre degradation, which meant that the Soft compound was not widely used.

The McLaren of David Coulthard was fasted until the morning of Saturday, the final day, when Ralf Schumacher recorded the best lap of the test for Williams with a time of 1:24.189s.

The generally good weather conditions prevailing in southern Spain enabled the teams to work through their programmes and to increase their confidence in the Medium and Soft compounds, identical to those which will be taken to Imola for the GP of San Marino on May 2. Air temperatures varied between 11 and 26 degrees C, while the track surface temperatures ranged from a minimum of 14 degrees C to a high of 47 degrees.

The dry and sunny weather predominated throughout the three days keeping the track dry until the last day of test - Saturday. . "Although Jerez generally has very little in common with the Imola track where the GP of San Marino will be held, we are satisfied that this test has provided the participating teams with an opportunity to improve their knowledge of how to maximise the performance of the 1999 Bridgestone tyres," says Mr Yoshihiko Ichikawa, Technical Manager of Bridgestone Motorsport. "Having tried the Soft tyre, most of the drivers set their best lap times on the Medium option.

"This result proves the correctness of our predictions and confirms that we are able to give the teams constructive advice based on the correct information."

The Bridgestone engineers were satisfied with the data acquired at the Jerez test. The sunny weather confirmed the evaluation they had made of the tyres' performance under very hot conditions.

The next official FOA F1 test is scheduled to take place at Barcelona before the Spanish GP. It will give the F1 teams an opportunity to set up their car for the Circuit de Catalunya in advance of the race, which takes place on May 30.
