Lance Stroll satisfied with first run in new Williams

The Montreal native completed 46 laps around the Circuit de Catalunya, setting the sixth fastest time in 1:22.452, a little more than two seconds slower than Daniel Ricciardo, quickest of all in the new Red Bull RB14 in 1:20.179.

This year’s car features several design changes, some of which are due to regulation changes such as the introduction of the halo and the removal of the shark fin. “It’s going to be an exciting year and a great opportunity for the team to get closer to the front, we believe”, commented Williams’ Chief Technical Officer, Paddy Lowe.

In the afternoon, Russian Sergey Sirotkin took over the Williams from Stroll.

Lance, how things did go this morning?

“It’s really good to get back in the car,” said Stroll. “It’s a new car, so it’s way too early to say anything. All systems worked so we had a good morning of work. So far, so good. It’s impossible to say if we have a championship-winning car. We just need to do more laps. Our plan is to do as many laps as possible.”

You’re not a rookie anymore, so things are different for you we suppose.

“Yes, I have more experience, so the situation is different. I have a year under my belt. I know all the tracks now, I contested 20 Grands Prix, so it’s a big advantage.”

What’s your reaction to the Halo?

“The Halo doesn’t change many things for me. I think that in the few weeks time, we won’t notice it anymore. Visibility is not a problem. I’m not a huge fan of the look, however, it’s going to help to save lives. It will reduce the chances of myself being injured in case of an accident. Getting in and out of the car is now a little bit complicated. You have to be kind of a Ninja…”

What’s your reaction to having to share your car with Robert Kubica one a while during the season?

“He’s a great contribution to the team. He has a lot of Formula 1 experience. He can really help us develop the car. It’s good for the team.”
