Latifi to get F1 free practice run as Renault test driver
Canadian GP2 driver Nicholas Latifi has signed on as a test driver for the Renault Formula 1 team - and will get at least one free practice session in the 2016 season.
The 20-year-old has been a regular on the European single-seater scene since 2012, with stints in European F3 and Formula Renault 3.5.
He finished 11th overall in FR3.5 with Arden last year, and will be moving to GP2 with the frontrunning DAMS squad this year.
"Being named test driver for the Renault Sport Formula 1 Team is something very special - an amazing opportunity," Latifi said.
"There’s a lot of history behind the Renault name in F1, so to be a part of that, and get the chance to learn from them and gain expertise in a full factory team, is really going to help my development.
"My dream has always been to reach Formula 1, and there’s a lot of hard work still to do, but this is another step towards me fulfilling my potential and earning my place on the grid."
Latifi's signing comes on the heels of the confirmed revamp of the Renault young drivers' programme, which now features fellow GP2 driver Oliver Rowland, as well as Louis Deletraz, Jack Aitken and Kevin Jorg.
"Nicholas is a fast developing young talent who has competed in a diverse selection of championships in his short career to date," said Renault Sport racing director Frederic Vasseur.
"We are excited at the prospect of nurturing him into a Formula 1-ready entity at such a dynamic time for the team.
"As well as contesting the GP2 Series – which is a perfect proving ground for new drivers – Nicholas will go through a programme with us to attain his superlicence with a view to contesting at least one FP1 session this year. We’re proud to have him on board."
Renault reserve driver Esteban Ocon is also expected to get practice outings with the Enstone-based team this year.
