Magnussen confident he will be fit for Monza

The Dane had to be taken to hospital for precautionary checks on a cut ankle following a massive impact with the tyre barriers on the exit of Raidillon.

He had lost control of his Renault over the kerbs and spun off, smashing into the tyres with an impact that forced the race to be stopped so repairs could be made to the barriers.

After being given the all-clear from hospital, Magnussen sent a tweet saying he would be fine for next week's race at Monza despite a sore ankle.

Renault team principal Fred Vasseur said he was relieved that Magnussen had been unhurt, but wanted to wait another day before being sure his driver would be all fine.

"He went to the medical centre and then the hospital in Verviers, they did an X-ray and global scan because of the impact but everything is okay," Vasseur told Motorsport.com.

"He looks okay and he looks convinced that he will be in Monza, but we have to wait until tomorrow if there will be any huge pain."

Vasseur said there had been no obvious explanation for what had caused the crash, although mechanical failure had been ruled out.

"On the television I had the feeling he had huge wheelspin but he was a bit more on the kerb," he said. "So I don't know."

Vasseur added that Magnussen will need a new chassis, engine and gearbox for next weekend, with all having been destroyed in the crash.
