Stewards decreed that Magnussen gained an advantage when he used the run-off area to pass Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat at Turn 12, but Magnussen was adamant that he was merely avoiding a collision with the Russian.

They effectively reversed their positions with the decision, Magnussen dropping to 12th.

“The penalty is frustrating, but that's racing sometimes,” said Magnussen. “We had new supersofts at the end, so a bit of, not a risk, but a chance to take.

“It paid off, I was able to get past people and gain some positions at the end. It’s the most fun I’ve had in terms of racing other people this year.”

Of the specifics of the incident with Kvyat, Magnussen argued: “I was braking on the outside much later than him, on nearly new supersofts, and he was on 30-lap old mediums.

“And then he just released his brakes and tried to come back at me in the corner. There is no way he’s going to stop his car. There wasn’t going to be room for two cars, I could see that.

“I knew he was on mediums and I was on supersofts, I’m on the limit of what I can brake, so of course he’s not going to be able to stop his car better.”
