...FOUR DAYS LATER, SOMEWHERE IN MALAYSIA
A map of Australasia and Asia would have been covered in pins and strange lines if you tried to plot the routes taken by the F1 circus in its attempts to travel from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. Some headed for the beaches of Malaysia, with the drivers inevitably claiming it was so they could train in the heat, while others headed off for Singapore or Hong Kong, mainly for retail therapy reasons. Of course the truly intelligent simply stayed put in Melbourne, hanging out on St Kilda beach until the very last moment.
None of this applies to the real workers in the paddock, who came here pretty much immediately after packing up cars and equipment on Sunday night. For some, a sort of day off was on the cards on Tuesday, but for most, this event might just as well have been a simple extension of the Australian GP. Certainly, life in the Red Bull Racing garage was busy, as the opening round of the season had caused carnage in terms of useable parts after David and Mark ended up with some serious damage to their RB4s.
As for the two drivers, the Aussie naturally enough chose to stay in his homeland until Tuesday. "It wasn't long enough mate," he said. Webber attended the big Rugby League game in Melbourne and then went from spectator to player once he got to Malaysia, taking part in a five-a-side football tournament at his hotel.
As for David, he came here to acclimatise to the sticky conditions. "I spend most of the time on an out-door rowing machine by the pool, sweating my &***!!!! off!" The idea of an outdoor rowing machine was hard to grasp as most people call it a boat, but apparently this was a gym machine that DC dragged outside to get the full benefit of the 35 degree heat and 80% humidity.
As for test driver, Sebastian Buemi, he has yet to experience the true glamour of F1 as he went down with some strange throat bug in Melbourne and only today has he emerged from his bed.
