The heat continued in Malaysia for second free practice; 33C and track temperature a boiling 39C. Minardi's Mark Webber was the first man on track but his misfortune from the first session was still with him -- within minutes smoke was coming from his engine. It was a very slow start to the session, Toyota's Allan McNish was out early but the teams were taking their time. Kimi Raikkonen put in a fast time for McLaren, just half a second behind Michael Schumacher's fastest in the previous practice -- while Schumacher himself had a spin.

Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya also had an off, into the gravel, but no damage was done and Raikkonen was putting in some blistering laps, heading the times and beating his own time every circuit. McLaren team mate David Coulthard was another in the gravel but kept the car going while Jordan remained strong with Fisichella in fourth. Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa put in fifth fastest early in the session which was a surprise considering the problems they have had. The R3 had aerodynamic modifications for this race so maybe they worked. Raikkonen still kept everyone else at bay, including Michael Schumacher when he took to the track. Both Arrows were in the top ten by half way through the session but the times were changing very rapidly as teams got into action.
Enrique Bernoldi and Felipe Massa both went into the gravel and ended their sessions at the same corner; yellow flags came out but it was still a quiet part of the session so no-one seemed hampered by them. Jordan featured the logo of German oil company Liquy Moly on the rear wing, they are expected to be announced as sponsors to the team this weekend. Raikkonen continued to keep both Ferraris behind him while Jordan's Takuma Sato put in 32 laps in a heavy schedule. Sauber were consistently lapping in the top five with Nick Heidfeld and McLaren seemed dominant when David Coulthard went second fastest. Williams were on the pace with Ralf Schumacher taking third and Jenson Button remained in touch for Renault, also in the top six.

Barrichello's Ferrari stalled and ended his session while Michael Schumacher put in a flying lap, but still couldn't knock Raikkonen off the top of the times. Toyota had an impressive seventh with Mika Salo but BAR were disappointing down in fifteenth and sixteenth. Most of the Michelin shod teams took to the track in the last ten minutes but after his earlier success de la Rosa's Jaguar stalled at the side of the track. Ralf Schumacher had a spin while Salo improved his time to fifth, Ferrari wore off the pace of the earlier session and McLaren remained on top. Final classification: Raikkonen, 1.37.399; Coulthard, M.Schumacher, R.Schumacher, Salo, Montoya.
