Mexico will make its return to the Formula One calendar in 2006, at a new circuit to be constructed in Cancun. F1 has not raced in Mexico since 1992 but the new deal consists of a five year contract for the country to host a Grand Prix, with an option for a further five years. The race is expected to be held in October.

There is slight confusion over the year, as AFP reported an assistant for Bernie Ecclestone as saying Mexico would not debut until 2007, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The new 5 km track, to be situated near Cancun's international airport, will cost an estimated $70 million and construction is scheduled to begin in January 2005. Herman Tilke, the man responsible for tracks such as Bahrain and Shanghai, will oversee the design

"This track offers some very, very high speeds with sharp curves that make cars brake at speed," said Tilke's representative Dirk Schneider, according to Reuters.

Recently there have been many debates about races such as Britain and France possibly being dropped from the schedule but reportedly the Cancun event will not replace one of the existing Grands Prix on the calendar, it will be an additional date.

"The issue was not even raised of taking the place of existing dates," said Luis Silveira, of Grupo Promotor Inversiones Caribenos, which is involved in the deal. "What was discussed and what came out was a new date, a new commitment, not a substitution."

F1 previously raced in Mexico at the Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome in Mexico City but the event was dropped from the calendar after it was decided the track was too bumpy. The CHAMPCAR (formerly CART) series still races at the circuit.

Of the current F1 drivers, only Michael Schumacher has competed in the series in Mexico. He finished third in 1992 for Benetton, behind Ricardo Patrese and winner Nigel Mansell, both driving for Williams.
