Michael Schumacher Update 1999-07-12

Schumacher update - 13:30 BST

The BBC is reporting that Michael Schumacher is in a comfortable condition and will be staying in another night at the Northampton General Hospital. David Wilson, chief executive of the hospital said "Michael Schumacher had a comfortable night. He is taking fluids and had a good breakfast, his wounds are healing well and he is moving his legs. He will stay at the hospital at least until tomorrow."

Jean Todt, team boss of Ferrari, has said Schumacher was very lucky "A few years ago I would have feared the worst for him but thanks to all the safety improvements over the past few years his injury was not as bad as it would have been then"

Todt reiterated that the team are still not sure what caused the accident "We don't know precisely what happened yet. It was probably he had a brake problem but we have to investigate."

The press are already speculating on who will replace Michael Schumacher. The Italian press have Ferrari test-driver Luca Badoer (currently driving for Minardi) as favourite. Others suggest Jean Alesi, which in return would get Sauber a cut in the amount they pay for engines. Of the drivers currently not driving, Mika Salo is in with a chance - though with his links to Honda, it isn't clear how this would sit with the Ferrari team. Hopes of luring a CART star, such as Montoya or Franchitti are next to nil.
