BAR takes to the streets

BAR got off to a steady start in Monaco today as the teams took to the streets in preparation for the most eagerly anticipated race of the year.

Monaco always starts a day earlier than other race weekends with the teams having Friday off as a rest day. And so Thursday morning saw the first action of the weekend as free practice got underway.

Both BAR drivers made a steady start as the team tried to find suitable set-up around the unique street circuit. Former Monaco winner Olivier Panis had his practice interrupted with a spin in the second session although overall he was happy with his car.

He said: "During the morning session the car felt good and we put in some good lap times so I am disappointed to have lost time during the second run.

"After my first lap in second free practice I hit the brake pedal and a bump at the same time which jolted me and I lost the pedal completely.I tried again and went straight on but then could not get the car into reverse.

"I was happy with the morning session although it is a little frustrating to have lost track time. However I am happy with the balance and am looking forward to Saturday."

16th was the result of Olivier's efforts although he is sure to climb the timesheets in Saturday's qualifying session.

JV was relatively contented to be inside the top-ten and, like Olivier, is confident of having a sound set-up for qualifying.

"Our position is acceptable at the end of free practice," said Jacques."We are just slow compared to McLaren and Ferrari. We did not get in a good lap with the new tyres and we should be quicker. There is still a lot of work to do."

Senior race engineer David Lloyd is confident that the team will be higher up in qualifying, although he admitted the team did not take advantage of all the track time available today.

"It is very difficult to look at the end result and see where we are because we missed so much running time today. The position is certainly not representative of what we can achieve and looking at the times from Oliver I would say that we are fairly competitive.

"We made quite a few changes to the set-up this morning so we have been able to gather a certain amount of information for qualifying."
