Juan Pablo Montoya set a blistering pole position time in the Canadian Grand Prix qualifying session, taking the front of the grid half way through the session and proving unbeatable thereafter. Williams were on fine form, with Ralf Schumacher also on the pace; the German was close behind team mate Montoya but was eventually beaten into fourth by the two Ferraris.

Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello put in some great flying laps but Montoya's time was not within their reach. McLaren had an unremarkable session, Kimi Raikkonen proving the better of the two in fourth but David Coulthard had an unsettled time, ending up seventh.
The surprise of the session was Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella who took the sixth slot on the grid in fine style but team mate Takuma Sato blew up in an impressive fashion. Running in eleventh position, Sato's engine let go and threw oil all over the track; plumes of smoke trailed the car and as he pulled over onto the grass it erupted into flames. Sato was unharmed and scrambled from the car very rapidly indeed.
Renault had a poor time, Jarno Trulli hitting the barriers and having to take the spare car while Button could only manage thirteenth. Sauber impressed with Nick Heidfeld taking seventh although Felipe Massa was frustrated first by the oil on the track and then by the rain that started to fall at the end of the session. The Brazilian ended up twelfth.

BAR had a good qualifying, continuing their better form from the practices with Jacques Villeneuve ninth and Olivier Panis eleventh. Eddie Irvine had his best qualifying session so far this season in fourteenth, Jaguar team mate Pedro de la Rosa sixteenth -- not a huge improvement but slightly more encouraging.
Arrows, Toyota and Minardi struggled at the bottom of the grid and by the end of the session rain was falling quite heavily, preventing any further improvements. Final top six classification: Montoya, M. Schumacher, Barrichello, R. Schumacher, Raikkonen, Fisichella.
