The second day of testing at Monza saw Juan Pablo Montoya again the fastest man, the McLaren clocking a best time of 1:19.814. Teammate Kimi Raikkonen was hot on his heels in second fastest, just a couple of tenths down. Tyres and configuration work were the focus for the pair in preparation for the Italian GP at the circuit next weekend.

Giancarlo Fisichella was the quicker of the two Renaults in third and teammate Fernando Alonso was sixth. They focused on running race distances, including tyre and brake testing for both the Italian GP and Spa-Francorchamps just a week later.

Williams had race drivers Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld at work, Webber fourth and Heidfeld 11th. "Mark and Nick were on duty for the team today, our second day at Monza," said test team manager Tim Newton.

"The pair completed aero tests, tyre evaluations and set-up work on both cars for next week's GP here. We also carried out further investigations following the tyre incidents that occurred during last weekend's race."

BAR joined the action on Thursday and Jenson Button was ahead of teammate Takuma Sato in fifth and eighth respectively. The Brackley squad also had development driver Adam Carroll at work, 18th on the time sheet. Tyres and set up were the work for the day.

Michael Schumcher was seventh on the time sheet and Ferrari also had tester Luca Badoer on track, ninth of the 20 drivers present. Aerodynamics, engine and tyres were the programme for the pair and both are scheduled to be back on track tomorrow.

David Coulthard led the Red Bull duo in 10th and teammate Christian Klien was a couple of places behind in 12th. Jacques Villeneuve was again the solo Sauber on track and was 13th. He worked on aerodynamics and tyres and Felipe Massa will take over tomorrow.

Ralf Schumacher was 14th for Toyota and team test driver Olivier Panis rounded off the times in 20th. Jordan had racer Tiago Monteiro in 15th and testers Nicky Pastorelli and Nicolas Kiesa 17th and 19th respectively. Robert Doornbos was the sole Minardi present, 16th while working on set up and aerodynamics.
