Murray Walker comments on competing in Targa Tasmania tarmac rally

MONDAY, MAY 19: Murray Walker, the 'voice' of Formula One motor racing for decades, competed in the Targa Tasmania tarmac rally which began on May 13 and finished yesterday. He was navigator in the Toyota Team Racing Camry Sportivo driven by former Bathurst 1000 champion Colin Bond. They finished 44th outright and second in their class. After the rally finished, Walker made the following comments about his week of competition in Targa Tasmania:

"Wow! What excitement. It was an absolute blast from beginning to end.

"I expected a lot from Targa Tasmania because I'd heard about it. I was looking forward to seeing Tasmania, but most of all I was looking forward to Targa. It was a five-day event of increasing severity and it has lived way, way beyond my wildest expectations.

"The first three days were comparatively gentle, and the last two days comparatively tough. I've enjoyed every second of it. I think Tasmania is a wonderful island, and Targa is a fabulous event.

"Maybe with 300-odd people they've got as many competitors as they want, but whatever, it is an absolutely superb event. I would come back again. I would come back next week if asked.

"I knew I was going to be taking part in the event in a Toyota Camry Sportivo. To be quite honest I didn't know what a Toyota Camry was because it's not sold in Britain. But, and I say this with absolute sincerity, the car has astounded me.

"The Camry is an absolute standard car, with just a roll cage. It doesn't have special shock-absorbers, special brakes, or special engine or gearbox. But it has not missed a beat. I've been watching Colin (Bond) all the way and it has handled extremely well. I am very, very impressed.

"I have been to Australia many times for the (Formula One) grand prix in Adelaide, and then Melbourne. The hospitality has always been second-to-none, and Tasmania was no exception. The people are among the most friendly you would wish to meet anywhere."
