The Sauber driver put a run on soft tyres to good use to set the benchmark with a 1:24.071 and finished well clear of early pace-setter Nico Rosberg, second for Mercedes, which was back in action after missing yesterday's afternoon session due to problems with the MGU-K.
Sebastian Vettel was third quickest in the Ferrari, and one of the busiest men on track with nearly 70 laps recorded.
Williams' Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen in the Toro Rosso - both taking over from their teammates today - completed the top five.
Verstappen got his first taste of the updated Toro Rosso and had a productive morning, completing a grand prix distance.
McLaren had better luck this morning, with Jenson Button managing 44 laps onboard the Honda-powered car after the team solved yesterday's problems.
Force India's new car finally made its track debut in the hands of Nico Hulkenberg, who took to the circuit around 30 minutes before the lunch break.
The German driver did not set a laptime until the very end, however, and covered just fives laps.
