David Coulthard put the new McLaren MP4-19 at the top of the time sheet at Valencia on Thursday on just the third day of its debut test. The Scot clocked a 1:10.021, beating the unofficial lap record set by Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya earlier in the week. McLaren test driver Alex Wurz was seventh quickest of the ten cars on track, and the pair concluded the team's test schedule for the week.

Montoya was second fastest, less than two tenths behind Coulthard. Teammate Ralf Schumacher was fourth and Williams tester Marc Gen? was fifth. Renault's Jarno Trulli was third quickest and team test driver Franck Montagny sixth. Trulli focused on tyres, Montagny on rear suspension and damper settings and both continued the assessment of components for the 2004 car.

Justin Wilson was back behind the wheel of the Jaguar and managed fourth fastest, racking up a whopping 127 laps. Mark Webber was also on duty and was at the bottom of the times. Ryan Briscoe remained the sole Toyota present and was ninth, also putting in over 100 laps of track time.

Over at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya Ferrari again had three cars on track, Luca Badoer topping the times for the third time this week with a 1:17.302. Felipe Massa was fourth quickest and Luciano Burti fifth. Burti only completed 16 laps before crashing at the entry to the pit straight. He was unharmed but the car lost both front and rear wings.

Jenson Button had a good day in the BAR interim chassis and was second quickest, just under two tenths off Badoer. Team tester Takuma Sato was sixth. The pair ended BAR's programme of working on the new rear-end of the car, including the 2004 Honda engine, and initial work with new tyre supplier Michelin.

Sauber concluded its three-day test with Ginacarlo Fisichella third on the time sheet. The Italian carried out a wet weather tyre programme and tried out a new power steering system.
