A day after it took nine minutes remove him from his stricken BMW Williams F1 in the United States Grand Prix, Ralf Schumacher was released and cleared to return home by medical authorities in Indianapolis.
The younger brother of six-time World Champion Michael Schumacher spun twice coming out of the 13th and final turn on Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2.605-mile road/oval circuit during the tenth lap of the 73-lap United States Grand Prix and impacted the restraining wall.
He came to rest shortly beyond pit entry on the paddock side of the race track. Debris clean-up took nearly as long as the extraction of Schumacher, as bits of his Williams chassis littered the front straight, forcing the Safety Car to turn Indy's seminal straightaway into a group of chicanes.
While it took quite a while to reach and extract Schumacher from his car, he was declared uninjured by the IMS and FIA staff, yet went to hospital in order to have precautionary scans.
Ralf Schumacher had intended to travel to Newport, Rhode Island yesterday in support of BMW's America's Cup challenger, but was unable to make that function due to his overnight hospital stay.
According to Williams' media spokesman Liam Clogger, Ralf Schumacher will not take part at scheduled Jerez test days this week but would instead rest up to be fit for the French Grand Prix on July 4th at Magny-Cours.
