Ricciardo only interested in Renault engine if competitive
Daniel Ricciardo says his Red Bull team should only consider using Renault engines next year if the French manufacturer can provide a competitive power unit.
Red Bull continues to be without an engine for next year after deciding it wanted to part company with Renault.
However, the team may find itself in a position where the French car maker is its only option, after Mercedes and Ferrari refused to supply their engines.
Ricciardo, however, reckons Red Bull should only consider a reconciliation with Renault if there are guarantees it will offer a frontrunning engine.
"It's a tough one. Obviously I want to be racing, I want to be on the grid, but if someone said you're going to be racing but you'll be running 16th, then maybe I don't want to be racing," said Ricciardo.
"If they [Renault] can prepare something better than they have this year to give us a chance to fight further up the grid, it is one of the better options for now.
"We still can't rule out anything, but we do want something competitive… Just to run around and make up numbers is not what we are about and as a driver I am not really interested in that."
Teammate Daniil Kvyat believes the Red Bull-Renault partnership could still prove successful despite a disappointing 2015 season.
"I believe through hard work and dedication you can achieve everything, it doesn't matter how many problems we had in the past," said Kvyat.
"Like I said, I have no ideas about these talks with Renault, Ferrari, Mercedes, Lamborghini – whatever it is. We just have to be patient at this stage.
"Every day is a different question, different situation. There is nothing obvious for me.
"I don't know much more than you know, I am sure guys like Christian [Horner] and Helmut [Marko] they are high professionals they will do everything to put ourselves in the best situation for next year."
