Hamilton had the upper hand over Sochi specialist Bottas throughout the weekend and managed to split the Ferraris in qualifying, despite their advantage being just over seven tenths on the straights. Kept the pressure on the Ferraris during the race and was where he needed to be to capitalise on the virtual safety car and win.

Verdict: Yes, he needed the VSC to gain track position, but had done everything he could to get the best from the car and be in the position to benefit.
