Stewards at the Monaco Grand Prix have decided there is no action to be taken on either Michael Schumacher or Juan Pablo Montoya for the incident in today's race. The pair were running behind the safety car after Renault's Fernando Alonso crashed at the exit of the tunnel when the accident happened.
Also in the tunnel, it appeared that Schumacher was trying to warm his brakes and slowed, the Ferrari locking up at the front. Montoya's Williams swerved to avoid him but the two cars touched. Schumacher hit the barrier and was forced to retired with damage to the front end. Montoya went on to finish fourth.
Montoya's explanation was: "Michael braked very hard as he was warming up his brakes and I moved to the right side of the track to avoid him but the gap narrowed and we touched."
Schumacher was visibly annoyed and marched off to the stewards after the incident. "We'd told Michael the safety car was coming in and as soon as that happens drivers start warming up their brakes," said Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn. "That happened, and Juan Pablo hit the back of him. I'm trying to restrain myself but it's frustrating going out of a race like that."
Williams' Patrick Head defended Montoya, saying he was not at fault - and perhaps Schumacher's decision to warm his brakes at that point was not a wise one. "All Juan has said is that Michael accelerated hard, spinning the rear tyres and then putting the brakes on hard," said Head. "One has to wonder whether that is a wise thing to do in a dark tunnel."
"No matter what Michael or Ross might think, Juan is not a dirty driver. He's been used to driving on high-speed ovals and respecting other drivers. I don't think there were any dirty tricks in there."
Alonso blamed Ralf Schumacher for his crash but currently it appears no action will be taken in that incident either.
