Ferrari has not had the best of starts to the 2005 season but while the team has only managed to get one car to the finish line in each of the two races so far, it would be unwise to presume that will continue. Michael Schumacher, who did not finish in Melbourne and picked up just two points in Malaysia, is certain that the Scuderia will return to its winning ways.

Schumacher had a difficult time at Sepang to come home seventh, while teammate Rubens Barrichello retired due to tyre problems. The defending champion knows there is a lot of work to do. "We were not able to be competitive and have to improve in all areas," said Schumacher.

"After two races that have not gone well, it can be said that the world championship situation is a difficult one, but it is certainly not a hopeless one. Sepang has always been one of the hardest races of the year for us."

Ferrari may have enjoyed good results at the Malaysian circuit in the past but Schumacher said it had often been difficult. "Notwithstanding everything, this is how things are, even if it is hard to understand from the outside. We have always had problems here though the results have often gone our way. So, we know how to take this race and this result."

We all know how unpredictable racing can be and while Ferrari is undoubtedly on the back foot at the moment, the Maranello squad is no doubt capable of turning things around. Early in 2003 the team faced a similar situation but came back to win both titles, so any suggestion of a crisis is premature.

"I am convinced that we will win races this year," Schumacher stated. "Didn't I always say last year that situations can change in an instant? So, now it has happened but things can turn in our favour once again. The great thing, and we all know it, is that our team has all the attributes to do this."

"Now we have to work hard and we know what he have to apply ourselves to. I don't expect any big change in the next race in Bahrain but I am certain that at Imola we will do fairly well."

"I have often been in situations where I have no chance in a race and then win the one after. We are a well-balanced team and we know that the season has to be considered as a whole. The championship is longer than ever and so lots of things can happen. Now we have to try our new car and then see how things work out."

Ferrari initially planned to debut the F2005 in Spain but always maintained that it depended on how the first few races went with the interim F2004M. Given that Australia and Malaysia could not really be described as successes for the team, it would not be a surprise to see the new car on track in Bahrain.

Schumacher and Barrichello will try out the F2005 at Mugello this week, after which a decision will be taken whether to introduce the car at the next race. "I have learnt a lot about the car from our test driver Luca Badoer," said the German. "Now I am just pleased to be able to try it out in person. The first time is always exciting."
