After causing a mini-riot this afternoon, when he signed autographs for the public in the pit lane, Michael Schumacher moved to the quieter surroundings of the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro media motorhome for his first meeting with the press since Sunday in Hockenheim, over two weeks ago.
Had the world champion missed Formula 1? "Yes and no," was his mixed response. "In a way, if you love racing, then you miss it, but I know I will be doing this job for a long time still, so it was nice to be able to relax and do fun things with my family."
Mathematically, the Constructors' title can stay at Maranello after this Sunday's race. In its simplest terms, the Renault team would have to score more than nine points more than Ferrari this weekend. Any other scenario and the Scuderia takes the Championship again. "It is delightful to be in this situation," admitted Michael. "But it does not make this weekend any more important than the others."
The big talking point of the summer break has been the news that Jenson Button is planning to leave BAR-Honda for the BMW-Williams team next year. "I was surprised to hear this, because I thought that Jenson seemed happy at BAR," said Michael. "However, I don't know the story behind this move, so I feel it would incorrect for me to comment."
According to one journalist in the audience, Renault's Fernando Alonso has said he can beat Schumacher if they had the same F1 car, and the German was asked if he would like to go head to head with the Spaniard on the track in road cars. "Yes why not, but maybe a better idea would be to race on skateboards," he joked.
