Michael Schumacher and Jean Todt were in Brisighella today to receive the "Lorenzo Bandini" award, presented to the Ferrari driver, in this the tenth year of the ceremony.
During a break in testing at the Fiorano track, Todt and Schumacher flew by helicopter to Brisighella, where they were met by Gabriella Bandini, the sister of the former Ferrari driver, the Mayor, Cesare Sangiorgi and Tiziano Samore, president of the Lorenzo Bandini Association.
Usually the prize is awarded to an up and coming driver but this year it was decided to break with tradition, as it was the tenth edition, and present it instead to Michael Schumacher. "In fact, I consider myself a driver who is still improving," said the world champion with a smile. "I am happy to have had the opportunity to visit such a beautiful area."
"I am particularly pleased to be here with Michael to collect this award, dedicated to the memory of a Ferrari driver whom I admired a great deal in my youth," added Jean Todt. "It is good to be welcomed here in Brisighella with so much affection and simplicity by Signora Bandini, the Mayor Sangiorgi and the organisers of the event."
Gabriella Bandini offered words of welcome for Michael. "I have always admired him, right from the beginning of his career. I see a special light in his eyes and I particularly appreciate that he has always demonstrated his attachment to Ferrari, even in the most difficult times."
After the prizegiving, Schumacher and Todt returned to Fiorano, where Michael continued testing at the wheel of an F2003-GA, in preparation for the Monaco Grand Prix, on 1st June.
