Senna appeal under review

Team boss Frank Williams is disappointed that Italy's high court is reconsidering the verdict of the last hearing into the death of Ayrton Senna. In 1997 Williams, technical director Patrick Head and then-designer Adrian Newey were acquitted of manslaughter after Senna's fatal crash at Imola in 1994.

The case was appealed in 1999 and the verdict was upheld, but last week the court decided to review the last appeal due to a claim of "material errors". This makes it possible to reopen the case although, according to Italian law, a written explanation of the claimed errors must be published before a new hearing can be set.

"I should make no comment," Frank Williams told Reuters in Bahrain. "I'm clearly disappointed that, after almost ten years, it's regurgitating itself again -- but that's the Italian system, We have to deal with it and respect it."

It's not yet certain that the case will be reopened. If the appeal verdict is overturned, the trial could be restarted. However, trying the case again ten years later would not be an easy task as much of the evidence no longer exists.
