FIA revises track limits guidelines for Turn 2

In his race director’s notes at the start of the weekend, Charlie Whiting told teams that any drivers running off the road at Turn 2 would have to stay wide and go to the right of a polystyrene block on the entry to Turn 3 before rejoining the track, ensuring that they gained no advantage.

Whiting wrote: “Any driver who fails to negotiate Turn 2 by using the track, and who passes completely to the right of the orange kerb element, must keep to the right of the red and white polystyrene block and re-join the track on the outside of Turn 3.”

However, after further reviewing the situation, and following a discussion of the subject during Friday’s drivers’ briefing, Whiting has opted to give the benefit of the doubt to drivers who find themselves pushed wide by a rival.

The revised notes now say: “Any driver [who is] forced off the track at Turn 2 and, as a consequence, fails to negotiate the corner by using the track, need not keep to the right of the red and white polystyrene block, provided it was completely clear he had been forced off the track and that by doing so he gained no advantage.”
