As the Sunday warmup session in Barcelona, the big surprise in the timing results was that there really were no surprises: the order had an uncanny resemblance to Saturday's qualifying results.
Polesitter Michael Schumacher was fastest, despite a visit to the gravel trap, at 1:22.855, ahead of Mika Hakkinen's McLaren, 0.359 seconds off the pace. The two were followed by their teammates, Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard.
The improved driver was Jenson Button, with the young Briton finishing the session in 5th place, compared to his 10th grid position. Pedro de la Rosa showed that his 9th grid position was no fluke, and was timed in 6th, despite having been forced into the spare car by a broken gearbox.
Jarno Trulli beat out his more experienced teammate, Heinz-Harald Fentzen, as he did in qualifying, and both Jaguars and Minardis showed slowly. The worst results in the session were reserved for the Saubers, though, as Mika Salo and Pedro Diniz finished at the very back, behind the Minardis, despite having qualified in mid-field.
So it is left for the Ferrari and McLaren race engineers to select the right strategies: will they make a difference, or will the race finish in the same order as the qualifying and the warmup did as well?
