Super Aguri headed to Spanish GP

The team that operates on Formula One's slenderest shoestring, Super Aguri, will participate at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, according to a team principal.

Super Aguri co-owner Fumio Akita told Reuters news agency Tuesday that it was his understanding the team's cars have been shipped to Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona for the race.

The team's future has been in doubt since last week when team founder, former F1 driver Aguri Suzuki issued a statement to verify that buy out negotiations with Magma Group, representing investors thought to be Dubai International Capital, had broken down.

The team, which began F1 participation in 2006 with help from Honda, now leans more heavily on the Japanese car maker even after the corporation announced it would cut back its effort regarding Super Aguri. Honda has struggled to be competitive with its F1 team. Honda last season scored six points in a competition won by Ferrari with 204 points; Super Aguri scored four.

Lack of funding was understood to be behind Super Aguri's brief appearance in winter testing. Lack of spare parts has been cited as keeping the team from robust participation in series races to date.

Super Aguri finished ninth among 11 teams in last year's FIA World Constructors' Championship. Drivers Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson continue with the team this year, although talk of Englishman Davidson being replaced by a driver who can contribute to team coffers has been mooted.
