Wolff – whose maiden name is Stoddart – was among 1,197 people honoured in the list, which is put together by nine independent committees set up by the British Cabinet Office.

The MBE – or ‘Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ – rewards contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations and public service.

“I am humbled to receive an MBE in recognition of my service to women in sport,” said Wolff. “Like any female competitor, I simply aspired to compete on a level playing field and was able to chase that dream thanks to the never-ending support of my family and all those who backed me along the way.

“This is a recognition of their efforts as much as my own. Now my focus is on passing that support and belief to the next generations of young women who dare to be different in chasing their motorsport dreams.”

From karts to DTM and F1

After a promising karting career, Wolff’s junior single-seater career stalled out in Formula 3, but she secured a drive in the German-based DTM series in 2006 – where she competed for seven seasons with Mercedes.

In 2011 she married Toto Wolff, who was then a shareholder at the Williams F1 team before he joined Mercedes as Executive Director in 2013.

In 2012, Wolff was appointed as a development driver at Williams, and became the first woman to take part in a Formula 1 race weekend for 22 years when she drove in free practice at the British Grand Prix in 2014.

Following a further run in Germany that year, she drove again in Spain and Britain in 2015 before announcing her retirement from racing at the end of the season.

She then concentrated on her ‘Dare to be Different’ initiative, launched in partnership with the UK’s governing body, the MSA, which aims to inspire and develop the number of females working in motorsport.

Wolff announced that she is expecting her first child next year.
