Tyres not most important says Williams

Some people hold the opinion that in this day and age tyres are even more important than the cars in Formula One, but it's not a view that team boss Frank Williams agrees with. The differences between Michelin and Bridgestone certainly contribute to the results but Williams thinks it's the overall package that is the winning combination.

"It's true, the tyres are very important," he said, according to the team website. "But how are you going to make the tyres work if you haven't got a great chassis and an excellent engine?"

"A Formula One Car is a kind of a piece of art. You can't strip such a piece of art down to its components to say, this is important and this isn't. The overall picture, the entire package makes the difference."

Formula One claims is regarded as the pinnacle of motorsports and the technical innovations in the sport are ever developing. After thirty years in F1, Williams is still amazed at the incredible machines.

"I must say that I have always been astonished by the standard of engineering and preparation of current Grand Prix cars," he said. "I look at our car and I raise my eyebrows and say 'how do these cars finish races?' because it is so phenomenally complex."
