INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, Sept. 15, 2000 - A timeline of the massive construction project at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to prepare the facility for the inaugural SAP United States Grand Prix on Sept. 22-24:
December 1998
·Dec. 2, 1998 -- Excavation and site work started on the infield road
course.
·Dec. 18, 1998 -- Began demolition of the old Tower Terrace grandstand.
January 1999
·Completed Phase 1 demolition of the old Tower Terrace grandstand.
February 1999 - March 1999
·Excavated and installed the Garage/Suite foundations and underground utilities.
April 1999
·Installed temporary stone and asphalt cover over new Garage/Suite building
foundations.
·Erected temporary grandstands in the old Tower Terrace location for the
1999 Indianapolis 500.
·Began deep soil stabilization for the new infield road course.
May 1999
·Building construction stopped for the 1999 Indianapolis 500.
·Began installation of the asphalt base course of paving for the infield
race circuit.
June 1999 - July 1999
·Constructed a concrete box culvert in the creek bed of Turn 1 to increase
the pit entrance width for the new F1 course.
·Installed 214 30-foot deep auger cast pile concrete foundations and the
elevator pit for the new Media Center.
·Covered the Media Center foundations with temporary stone and asphalt to
reconstruct the ABC television broadcast compound for the Brickyard 400
event.
·Installed the asphalt intermediate and asphalt surface courses on the
infield race circuit.
August 1999 (following Brickyard 400)
·Removed temporary grandstands and uncovered the Garage/Suite foundations
to
begin construction of the concrete cast-in-place building walls for the new
Garage/Suites.
·Uncovered the Media Center foundations and continued installation of the
auger cast piles.
·Began construction of the cast-in-place concrete elevator tower and
underground utilities for the new Media Center.
·Demolition (Phase 2) of the old tower terrace grandstands.
·Removed the old Victory Circle platform.
·Began provisions to build a temporary incoming communication feed for the
entire IMS facility to allow uninterrupted communication service to continue
throughout construction.
·Demolished the old Press Building to make way for Legends Row building.
September 1999
·Began foundation work for the Tower Extension project immediately adjacent
to the Pagoda, which houses Formula One race control and Timing and Scoring.
·Continued the construction of the Media Center concrete elevator shaft.
October 1999
·Completed the cast-in-place concrete building shell for the first two
Garage/Suite buildings.
·Began cast-in-place concrete walls for the Tower Extension project.
·Completed Media Center foundation walls and underground utility work in
preparation for building steel.
·Began site preparation and underground utility work for the new South
Compound Building, which contains concessions, catering compounds and the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Firehouse.
November 1999
·Completed the cast-in-place concrete building shell for the third
Garage/Suite Building and began structural steel erection for the
Garage/Suites.
·Began Tower Extension structural steel erection.
·Began structural steel erection for the four-story Media Center.
·Began earth retention and mass excavation for the Tunnel 6 project.
·Began demolition work on the existing press booths, located in the Paddock
Grandstand Press Penthouse, to make way for structural steel to create the
new Broadcast Booths.
·Began South Compound Building foundation work.
December 1999
·Began Media Center first floor cast-in-place concrete walls.
·Began Tunnel 6 extension foundations.
·Began Broadcast Booth structural steel installation.
·Began building foundations for the new Legends Row buildings, which will
house the Formula One team offices.
January 2000
·Began installation of large suite glass panels at the west elevation of
the
Garage/Suites.
·Began Media Center second floor cast-in-place concrete walls.
·Began forming and pouring the cast-in-place concrete walls for the Tunnel
6
extension.
February 2000
·Began pit and pit lane excavation and site work.
·Began Media Center third floor cast-in-place concrete walls and building
concrete slab work.
·Began concrete columns for the Walkway Bridge over Tunnel 6 extension.
·Began site work and utilities for the new TV Compound location east of the
Media Center.
·Began structural steel framing and masonry wall work for the new Legends
Row buildings.
·Began South Compound masonry wall construction.
March 2000
·Continued site work for run-off areas and guardrail installation along the
infield road course.
·Continued building interior finishes for the new suites above the new pit
side garages.
·Began pit and pit lane concrete paving operations.
·Began Tower Extension interior wall framing.
·Completed the balance of the Media Center concrete walls and concrete
slabs.
·Began the Tower Terrace stand extension steel work east on the Media
Center.
·Finished the Tunnel 6 extension concrete walls and tunnel lid.
·Began installation of the Broadcast Booth framing and enclosure work.
·Completed the masonry walls for Building A of Legends Row and began
interior mechanical, plumbing, and electrical work.
·Completed the South Compound building masonry and roofing system.
April 2000
·Completed interior suite finishes for the pit side suites above the new
garages.
·Began Media Center interior work for the first and fourth floors.
·Began the Winner's Podium cast-in-place radius concrete walls.
·Continued finishes and second-floor public restrooms for Legends Row
Building A.
·Continued finishes for the new South Compound Building.
·Began final site work around the various projects and began site concrete
paving.
·Completed asphalt paving of the Formula One pit lanes.
May 2000
·Completed the South Compound Building and installed equipment.
·Completed finishes on Building A (north building) of Legends Row.
·Completed the site concrete and asphalt paving installation.
·Constructed temporary bleachers and grandstands at the Garage/Suites.
·Developed the first and fourth floors of the Media Center into a usable
and
operational state for the Indianapolis 500.
June 2000
·Begin installation of mechanical and electrical systems for Gasoline Alley
catering suites.
·Continued work on South Building of Legends Row.
·Continued construction work throughout Media Center.
·Started installation of debris fencing on infield section of road course.
·Continued installation of gravel traps and turf runoff areas on infield
section of road course.
·Continued development of Plaza area behind new Pagoda tower.
July 2000
·Finished installation of mechanical and electrical systems for Gasoline
Alley catering suites.
·Continued construction work throughout Media Center.
·Continued installation of gravel traps and turf runoff areas on infield
section of road course.
·Continued development of Plaza area behind new Pagoda tower.
·Construction of foundation for Formula One digital broadcast center.
August 2000
·Completed development of Plaza area behind new Pagoda tower, including the
extension of the famous "yard of bricks" at the start-finish line through
the Pagoda tower and into the Plaza.
·Completed installation of debris fencing on infield section of road
course.
·Completed installation of gravel traps and turf runoff areas on infield
section of road course.
·Completed installation of all tire barriers on course.
·Unified oval and infield sections of road course, including removal of
certain barriers, pavement striping.
·Installed of Formula One Race Control closed-circuit television system.
September 2000
·Completed testing of all operational systems in new facilities by Sept.
10.
