Why the French GP is so important for Ferrari

With the stewards confirming that the result of the Canadian Grand Prix still stands, here's why the French GP could be a key event for Ferrari's season.

With the Canadian Grand Prix verdict going against Vettel, the Ferrari man might feel he is effectively owed a race, but he will also be looking to deliver an improved performance compared to last year's French Grand Prix.

Starting the 2018 race from third on the grid, he was involved in a collision on lap one with Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, and was forced to carve his way through the field in order to salvage a fifth place. It was one of numerous mistakes last season, so starting a fightback in France would be an appropriate location.

But can Ferrari provide the package to challenge Mercedes?

On paper, the Paul Ricard circuit should suit the Mercedes W10 more than the Ferrari SF90, but that's not stopping Ferrari from bringing a host of updates to their car, and the French Grand Prix has been touted as a venue where Ferrari could potentially come to terms with their car.

Neither Vettel nor Ferrari have been overly complimentary about their upgrades in Friday practice but, as Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell discuss in the Autosport Podcast, round eight of the championship could be vital turning point on their road to recovery.
