Williams braced for tougher Hungary weekend

Williams is preparing itself for a more 'difficult' time at the Hungarian Grand Prix that it had during its star performance at Silverstone earlier this month.

The weaknesses of the FW37 at slow-speed tracks was exposed at the Monaco Grand Prix when neither Felipe Massa nor Valtteri Bottas managed to qualify in the top 10 – and failed to finish in the points.

Analysis of what went wrong in Monaco has highlighted areas that needed improving.

Although those lessons have been taken on board, the team is equally aware that nothing is guaranteed until it finds out on track how it will fare.

Deputy team principal Claire Williams told Motorsport.com: “We did a lot of analysis after Monaco to try to identify the weak areas of the car and the causes of those areas.

“We know the engineers are working hard to resolve them, so we have to wait and see. It will be difficult, but Silverstone is one of the toughest races on the calendar and we led that grand prix.”

Downforce lifts hopes

Bottas echoed his team's predictions of a tough time, but believes downforce improvements made to the car since Monaco will be a boost.

“I think Budapest will be for sure a bit more difficult for us,” he explained. “But we can still go there trying to fight for good positions.

“We have improved the downforce on the car, which could help us in Budapest, but it is difficult to know. We are going forwards all the time.”
