The new gearbox of the WilliamsF1 BMW FW25 has been developed in close cooperation of WilliamsF1 and BMW.

As in the past, the gearbox of the car of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya has been designed by WilliamsF1. In the development stage, however, the two partners BMW and WilliamsF1 worked together very close to make full use of the resources of a global leader in the automobile business and a successful Formula 1 team.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen explains how the teamwork of BMW and WilliamsF1 looked like in practice: "In the last two years we have been increasing the support of WilliamsF1 in the fields in which a car manufacturer just has a better standing than a Formula 1 team. We already see the results."

"The working staff in our FIZ (competence centre for research and innovation) comprises 6,000 people. We have installations at our disposal which represent state-of-the-art technology in all respects. You can only design, install and develop these installations if they are used to capacity all over the year. This applies to a car manufacturer."

The BMW WilliamsF1 Team benefits from the know-how and the technical resources of BMW. Theissen continues, "Thus we have an equipment which a Formula 1 manufacturer usually has not. We make this equipment available to WilliamsF1. In terms of calculations, the equipment comprises the software and the computer capacity. This includes test installations, like gearbox test rigs, which are available in Munich and therefore increasingly used by WilliamsF1."

"Furthermore, it includes basic insights and development results, which we use for our regular gearboxes. This includes material, manufacturing methods and surface treatment."

The gearbox, the result of this cooperation, is now part of the WilliamsF1 BMW FW25 and perfectly proved its power in the first two races. Mario Theissen is convinced, that "the gearbox is a giant leap forwards. Things have changed, inside as well as in terms of the outer layer."
