Williams reveals radical new winglet

Having already introduced a major update for its Mercedes-powered machine at the Austrian GP, the new wing in front of the rear wheels was evidence of its bid to deliver even more.

Teams are often frustrated by the limits on where aerodynamic parts can be introduced but the winglet is in an area that has not been widely exploited before - potentially because it falls foul of such restrictions.

Williams is keeping tight-lipped about the plan for the part, but if it is not within the rules then it could be present just for information-gathering purposes - so that the team can get valuable airflow data around the rear wheel.

It is also possible that it could be part of an evaluation project for longer term development.

Williams performance chief Rob Smedley said his team was doing all it could to deliver more performance for the next race at the British Grand Prix.

"We just constantly have to keep chipping away in bringing performance and, that said, we are looking at how we can improve the package we did bring here [to Austria].

"The target is to get to Silverstone and improve it further."

Williams has finished on the podium at the last two races and is locked in a fight with Ferrari for second in the constructors' championship.
