February 2nd saw much busier track action at Valencia with 14 drivers from six teams on duty. McLaren test driver Alex Wurz clocked 1:09.203 for the best time of the day and racked up 131 laps in last year's MP4-19B. Kimi Raikkonen was also at work, driving the MP4-20, and was sixth on the timesheet.
The Renault duo of Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella were second and third respectively, both behind the wheel of a new R25. The pair experienced mechanical problems while carrying out distance runs to evaluate set up and tyres, but were overall positive about the response of the new car.
Nick Heidfeld was fourth fastest in the new Williams and teammate Mark Webber was in sixth. "Mark and Nick continued where they left off yesterday with acclimatization work and set-up evaluations," said test team manager Tim Newton. "Both drivers also carried out elements of tyre testing with Michelin. Mark and Nick will resume testing tomorrow."
Takuma Sato headed four BARs on track, he and team tester Anthony Davidson being joined by Young Driver Programme hopefuls James Rossiter and Alan van der Merwe. Davidson was 11th quickest while Rossiter and van der Merwe rounded of the times in 13th and 14th. Ralf Schumacher and test driver Olivier Panis were eighth and ninth respectively for Toyota.
Rubens Barrichello was the faster of the two Ferraris on track in 10th and team tester Marc Gené was 12th. Barrichello drove the interim F2004M and focused on set up, while Gené took the wheel of an F2004 for electronic work and tyre testing.
