Mercedes' "higher" lower sidepod
Mercedes clearly respect the aero benefits of the Ferrari/Red Bull/Haas/Williams higher sidepods but on the current 2018 car are unable to emulate them in full because of their lower-mounted internal upper crash structure beams. In Austria, as we show in our latest, exclusive, 3D animation, they revealed their compromise - a cutaway sidepod exit and Red Bull-style horizontals designed around the higher crash beams. Also on the W09s in Austria: twin mirror mounts and tall slots built in to the rear wing endplates.
