Julien Jousse was the only driver in today's two qualifying sessions for the FIA Formula Two championship to score a starting position in the first two rows for each of tomorrow's races at Donington Park.

However, in the first session it was Tobias Hegewald with the pole position, as the German set a fast lap of 1:23.116, a time that would not be matched in the afternoon's second session.

"I'm really happy to be back in the top three for qualifying," said Hegewald. "I had a lot of problems in the test and free practice, but we worked on the car and I worked on myself - that's why we have ended up where we are. You never know what is going to happen in the race, but of course victory is the target for me tomorrow."

Hegewald clocked the time at the two-thirds mark, with ten minutes remaining in the session. It stood resolute, with 0.313 seconds separating Hegewald and second-place man Mikhail Aleshin, until a few minutes before the end.

At that point, though, Jack Clarke ran off the track at Coppice Corner, impacting the barriers heavily enough to bring out the red flags to stop the session, and that was it, eliminating the usual mad dash to the track in the dying minutes of the session.

The end result wa sa bit of a scramble atop the timesheets; behind Aleshin, championship leader Andy Soucek claimed third place, next to Jousse in fourth. With just three hundredths of a second separating those three, there certainly is a high probability that positions would have changed had the session finished normally.

In the second session, to set the starting grid for tomorrow's second race, Sebastian Hohenthal set a fast time early, giving notice to his competitors that he intended to move up from the eighth place he had scored in the first qualifying.

In the latter half of the session, though, Jousse and Hohenthal put on a good contest for the second pole position, trading fast times back and forth. Soucek, too, tried to get into the mix, but he ran off the track at Craner Curves, finishing the session and the day in the barriers.

Jousse finished the session with a fast time of 1:23.507, 0.128 seconds quicker than Hohenthal. Mirko Bartolotti (0.174 seconds off the pace) and Kazim Vasiliauskas (0.202 seconds) will occupy the second row.

"I have been looking for this result in qualifying for a very long time," Jousse said. "I have been fourth or fifth but never on the top. "I think it is a good beginning for this weekend because I need to score a lot of points to catch the leader of the championship."

Jousse is fourth in the championship with 25 points, but 21 behind Soucek, who has 46. Robert Wickens and Philipp Eng further separate the two, with 39 and 27 points, respectively.
