International race winners confirm entry for 2009 season

The FIA Formula Two Championship has signed Canadian driver Robert Wickens and Frenchman Julien Jousse for the series' inaugural season in 2009.

19 year-old Wickens joins F2 in a partnership between the series and Red Bull Racing. Wickens has been a member of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2006, and won the Formula BMW USA Championship in the same year with the support of the energy drink manufacturer. He has competed for Canada in A1GP, scoring the team's sole victory during the 2007/8 season, as well as representing Red Bull in Formula 3 Euro Series and World Series by Renault. In addition, Wickens has been involved in live street demonstrations of the Red Bull Formula One race car.

Julien Jousse, who finished runner-up in the 2008 World Series by Renault, was the first driver to announce his involvement in F2. Jousse has previously raced in the Championnat de France Formula Renault 2.0, where he finished third in 2006 with one victory and four podium finishes.

Robert Wickens said: "For me the decision to be in Formula Two is a no-brainer. The design of the cars and calibre of the prize means it will be one of the most competitive series around. It's also hard to see any other series competing with F2 at the moment in terms of price, so it's a great move for me in all senses. I would love to follow Jacques Villeneuve and be the next Canadian in Formula One, and hopefully I can achieve that through success in F2."

Julien Jousse said: "I chose F2 because the FIA's support is the key to the championship's future success, and because of the possibility to receive a Formula One test with Williams. It is also a major stepping stone regarding the challenging economic circumstances of today - it is essential for the sponsors to have a clear understanding of how drivers climb up the ladder and make it in F1."

Jonathan Palmer, Chief Executive of F2 organiser MotorSport Vision, added: "F2 is currently attracting a substantial level of interest and the calibre of drivers signing up for F2 is really encouraging. Red Bull's involvement shows just how attractive the series is, particularly in the current economic climate. Grids are already oversubscribed but we are still accepting applications so the future looks incredibly exciting for F2 right now."
