Formula Two series leader Andy Soucek scored his second series pole in dramatic fashion, playing a cat and mouse game throughout most of the qualifying session with Canadian Robert Wickens. Near the end he pulled out a flying lap of 1:20.402, over three-tenths of a second faster than Wickens.

The Spaniard will start on the pole for the first race at Motopark Oschersleben in Germany. Soucek will have a go again tomorrow morning in qualifying for the second race of the weekend.

"I had a very good second flying lap on the new tyres, which could have been even faster but I hit a yellow and it spoilt the lap," said Soucek. "It's not easy - the level of competition is increasing every race. I think I have found a very good set up and the car is behaving incredibly well and I have a lot of confidence, so I'm in good shape."

Wickens looked to be in good stead for the front row until the final four minutes when Mirko Bortolotti nipped the Canadian for second fastest time by 0.005 seconds!

The Italian commented, "I could have improved a bit but I don't think it would have been enough for pole, so I'm happy with second. It's my first year in international racing so I've had to gain a bit of experience. Sometimes I have made mistakes but that's racing you know. Now we are on the front row and I'm thinking about tomorrow."

Bortolotti's fastest lap was a 1:20.789. Wickens who sits second in the points clocked his best at 1:20.794.

Wickens might have been able to answer back had he not used up his tires prior to a red flag which stopped the action just under 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

"Second row is better than where I have started in the past," Wickens said. "I'm pretty sure the race on this track could be decided on the first corner. Starting third is obviously more difficult than starting first, but we'll just have to see how the race goes and try to salvage some points."

Saturday's race will start at 2:15pm (local time) and for North American fans, that will at 8:15am EDT. The morning qualifying will set the grid for Sunday's race.

Only two events remain when the drivers depart from Germany before the inaugural champion is crowned. While Soucek holds a hefty margin over his closest rivals, nothing is set in stone.
