Contact blights Kerr's promising pace in World Series finale
Barcelona, Spain (October 29, 2006) -- Robbie Kerr's 2006 World Series by Renault campaign ended today at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain with an almost identical race to yesterday's outing with the luckless Brit being taken out at the first turn on the opening lap. The KTR racer, having qualified a season-high fifth on the grid today, found himself knocked off at the first corner at the start of the 26-lap race but responded following a lengthy pit-stop to return and set fastest lap of the race.
Today's event proved to be a microcosm of the former British F3 Champion's whole season, encouraging pace blighted by plain bad luck as he more often than not found himself at the wrong end of someone else's incidents and accidents. The Burbage racer, with driving duties for A1 Team Great Britain in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport ahead of him over the winter, finished a disappointing 17th overall in the World Series Driver Standings with 16 points.
Race 2, Qualifying (Pole -- Sean McIntosh (CAN), 1m27.115s)
Bouncing back from a stomach bug which had plagued him the day before, Kerr revelled in the competitiveness of his 420bhp Formula Renault 3.5 and he quickly found himself amongst the pace setters in his Group B qualifying session this morning. When the session ended he had turned the third fastest lap, a sprightly 1m27.666s, behind his KTR team-mate and pole winner, Canada's Sean McIntosh and Sweden's Alx Danielsson in the Comtec Racing entry. Robbie lined up fifth on the grid once Group A's times were included to record his hightest start position of the season.
Race 2, 26 Laps (Winner -- Alvaro Parente (POR), Victory Engineering)
Kerr's encouraging qualifying performance was quickly translated into a decent run to the first turn as the 26-lap race started only for disaster to strike once again. Turning into the corner Robbie found himself collected by another car before he too was forced into the path of a fellow competitor. With the tracking on his car badly damaged he limped back to the pits where the team worked on the track rod arm and fired him back out later in the race to reel off some laps. In doing so he claimed the fastest lap of the race amongst a series of competitive times before further issues resulted in his ultimate retirement. Portugal's Alvaro Parente took the win while Kerr was once again forced to watch the chequered flag despondently from the pits.
Robbie Kerr - #5 Team KTR:
"Well it's definitely not the way I wanted to end the season! Basically today's race sums up what the whole season's been like. It's pretty disappointing that once again we showed a decent turn of speed only to see our hopes of recording a decent finish wrecked by someone else's accident!"
