Draco Racing couldn’t have hoped for a better finale of the three-day F.Renault 3.5 test in Alcaniz. On the Motorland Aragon track the Italo-Brazilian outfit, that had managed to put at least one car in the top 5 in each and every session held on the two previous days, shone once again closing Thursday’s running with an amazing P2 effort by Pietro Fantin.
The Brazilian driver, who had been P6 in the morning session after being hampered by an unexpected rain shower, drove a string of masterful laps late in the afternoon, when the track finally dried up. In a heated battle that resembled a qualifying session, Pietro’s final laptime was just 0.033 off the fastest performance. In the meantime, Luca Ghiotto did his part too carrying on with his amazing progression, a process that saw him reduce his gap from the frontrunners and clock a laptime that was just four tenths shy of the lead. Such an outcome was the deserved reward for team owner Guto Negrao, team manager Simone Giglio and race engineers Andrea Tesi Mancini (Fantin) and Jerome Woiret (Ghiotto).
The team is now heading to the factory, where the technical staff will take their time to go through the huge amount of data collected during this spotless test, that saw both cars perform flawlessly, with no woes whatsoever. Draco’s next commitment will come in one-month time, with the second collective test in Jerez, from 24 to 26 March.
Pietro Fantin (S1 – P6; S2 – P2): “I’m really delighted. Our aim for this test was to improve our car’s setup day after day, and to be on top on the final day. Well, that’s what we did: we have found an amazing setup, that proved to be perfect even in the latest part of today’s last session, when the track was offering more grip after each lap. I’m also very happy with my performance, because it was as hard-fought as a qualifying session and I didn’t do any mistake. It’s really a dream start”.
Luca Ghiotto (S1 – P15; S2 – P7): “I believe that I can be pretty satisfied with my performance in this test. I’ve been progressing all the time, and that’s the primary objective of such a test for a rookie driver. I managed to reduce the gap from the frontrunners to just 4 tenths, and my laptime could have been a couple tenths better without a mistake at the ‘corkscrew’. I would have finished even higher in the timesheet so I’m a bit mad at myself, but on the other hand I’m happy to see that the team is happy with my performance and my attitude. This is just the start of a very long journey, so I’m going home with a big smile on my face”.
