Tiago Monteiro Puts On A Show at Jarama
A 2nd and a 6th final stands at his debut in the World Series by Nissan
Tiago Monteiro's debut at the World Series by Nissan, couldn't possibly be more captivating, with the Portuguese driver playing the main role in this season opening race, by leading 10 out of the 18 laps at the Jarama track (Madrid - Spain), under intensive rain. Only a penalization, that forced him to do a pit lane drive by, would steal his eminent victory, nevertheless, the Carlin Motorsports Driver finished in a brilliant second place, behind Enrique Bernoldi, who received the victory served on a tray. On the second race, held during the afternoon, Tiago finished 6th managing to guarantee a handful of points, which place him in the 3rd place in the Championship.
By securing the second best time in qualifying, Tiago Monteiro assured a first lane start in the grid, however, a mistake in the final corner of the warm up lap, made him do a car spin. Tiago regained his place in the first lane, which unfortunately was against regulations, since Bernoldi had already come to a full stop in his grid spot. Nonetheless, the Portuguese driver made a sensational race, surpassing the Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi on the 8th lap, leading the race until the very end, when the commissioners showed him the drive by sign: "It was a truly complex race due to the slippery track conditions. I made a mistake while approaching the starting grid, when I went to close to the track limits as I was trying to warm the tyres, losing my nose wing in the grass and forcing the car to spin" explained Tiago Monteiro, after displaying an incredible performance in the rain.
"I had a good start but didn't manage to take the immediate lead. For 8 laps, I studied the best time to steal Enrique Bernoldi's spot, as we both risked going off track many times. I started pressuring Bernoldi in an early phase, eventually catching and overlapping him. I was surprised how easily I managed to distance myself from him, lap after lap, gaining an 8,9 seconds advantage. We were both over 20 seconds apart from the third contender" said Tiago Monteiro.
On the second race, with a total of 26 laps, the Portuguese Driver took of from the 12th position and managed to regain some ground: "The car wasn't as well prepared as for the morning race, which is why I had to be careful and not take any chances. The rear end was very unstable, and considering the slippery track conditions, I am very pleased that I managed to obtain a 6th place, guarantying an extra 5 points. The first half of the race was very exiting, even though I spent the second half of it almost entirely alone. It was a good weekend, with a very positive balance, as a learning procedure and in terms of Championship points, which allow me to be amongst the best since the beginning."
