Kerr DNF's following Misano pit-lane incident
Round 4 -- World Series by Renault, Misano Circuit, Italy
Robbie Kerr, #5 Team KTR, Race 2 -- Qualified: 18th / Finished: DNF
While Robbie Kerr ended up collecting a championship point for tenth place following yesterday's late exclusion of Race 1 winner Pastor Maldando, having initially taken 11th at the flag, today's second race proved to be another source of frustration for the British racer as for the third time in four World Series by Renault starts he was taken out of the race, this time in the Misano pit-lane thanks to Prema Powerteam's Gregory Franchi.
Race 2, Qualifying (Pole -- Sebastian Vettel, 1m18.784s)
With the 15 cars of Group B first out on track today, Kerr's hopes of an improved qualifying slot over yesterday's disappointing 17th place were quickly dashed as he effectively helped clean a dirty track by being one of the first runners out to set a time.
Reporting a better handling car if nothing else, Kerr's best lap of 1m20.711s around the 4.06km Italian circuit placed him ninth in the group for the second day running and held him to an 18th place start position following Group A's qualifying session.
Race 2, 29 Laps (Winner -- Sebastian Vettel, Carlin Motorsport)
Faced with the challenge of trying to make up ground on a track where passing proves notoriously difficult, Kerr made the most of a decent start to improve his position. Taking his mandatory pit-stop in 14th place with six laps completed little did Robbie know that his race was away to end abruptly. Once again the KTR crew performed a flawless stop but disaster struck as Robbie headed back down the pit-lane only to be collected by Gregory Franchi as the Italian speared out of his own pit-box and straight into the right-hand side of Kerr's #5 car.
With the impact forcing Kerr into the pit-wall, the subsequent left-side suspension damage ensured the Brit's race ended cruelly and prematurely.
Robbie Kerr - #5 Team KTR: "Well I can't really take much from this weekend other than yesterday's point! I guess we have to put everything behind us, knowing we were innocent victims today, and look to Spa!"
The World Series by Renault heads to Spa, Belgium for Round 5, 28th-29th July.
