RP Motorsport experienced an historic day in Budapest, sealing their maiden Formula V8 3.5 victory. The Italian squad cruised to win race 1 with Johnny Cecotto Jr, who turned out as one of the main contenders since Friday’s practice and in Saturday’s qualifying session.
The Venezuelan racer was off to a very good start from fourth, moving up one spot right away and improving to second place a few laps later. Cecotto became the race leader on lap 13, and then sailed to the take the chequered flag.
It has been a remarkable accomplishment for RP Motorsport, taking their first win in what was only their second Formula V8 3.5 outing after a promising debut last week in Alcañiz.
Vitor Baptista enjoyed a good race as well, ending up in the top-10 again and taking another points finish at his first run at the Hungaroring.
Johnny Cecotto Jr (#21) – Q1 P4 – Race 1 P1
“The team did a superb job. We had a small issue in the first free practice session but we were leading right from the second one. The car was very good and after the problems we had in Alcañiz where we were struggling, today we put it all together for qualifying and the race. I managed a good start, I pushed hard and when Tom made a mistake I got by and kept first place”.
Vitor Baptista (#22) – Q1 P14 – Race 1 P10
"This is my first weekend at this track. I did some simulator work previously but real driving is different. Practice went well despite I couldn't put together good lap. I was increasing my chemistry with the car, the corners the braking points. In Q1 I faced some traffic during my best flying lap so I had to start from the back of the grid. During the race I struggled quite a lot because overtaking on this track is very difficult, but we had good battles and I could pass some drivers. The pace was good and we are focused on tomorrow".
