Kerr scores WSR top-ten at Spa
Belgium Robbie Kerr, #5 Team KTR, Race 2 -- Qualified: 20th / Finished: 10th (1 Point)
Britain's Robbie Kerr enjoyed a slightly brighter day today, literally, at Spa-Francorchamps as he raced his way from 20th on the World Series by Renault grid to take the tenth and final points paying position in Race 2 in Belgium. Kerr, competing in the second 'home' race of the year for the Belgian-based KTR squad, picked up his fourth points score of the season.
Race 2, Qualifying (Pole -- Pastor Maldonado, 2m03.962s)
Kerr's qualifying woes were reserved for yesterday as both sessions were held before Race 1. Having qualified 16th for the first race, Kerr noted that his V6 power unit was lacking straight line speed and therefore an engine chance was made between the two sessions. The KTR crew performed superbly under pressure to get Kerr's #6 Formula Renault 3.5 ready for the second session. The former British F3 Champion ended up qualifying tenth fastest in Group A with a lap time of 2m04.787s placing him 20th on the grid for this afternoon's Race 2.
Race 2, 15 Laps (Winner -- Borja Garcia, RC Motorsport)
Today's race was shortened to 40 minutes but unlike yesterday remained completely dry. Robbie was charged with racing a car with considerable front-end vibration thanks to flat spots on his front tyres caused a day earlier in qualifying. Despite this Kerr hustled his car up the order on the opening lap, passing for position and benefiting from others misfortune. A safety-car period mid-race allowed Kerr another key opportunity for passing at the re-start and he duly climbed to tenth place and the final point on offer at the chequered flag.
Robbie Kerr - #5 Team KTR: "I'm fairly happy to have come away with a point given everything that happened yesterday in qualifying and the race. Obviously the car wasn't perfect today and I had to contend with the vibrations from the flat-spots on the tyres but it's nice to finish that's for sure. Tenth isn't where we want to be finishing so hopefully we'll get to the front at the Nurburgring."
The World Series by Renault heads to Germany's Nurburgring for Round 6, 5th-6th August.
